Denn dieser in elegantem Französisch geschriebene Text der preußischen Prinzessin bietet ein grelles, abstoßendes Bild der Zeit Friedrich Wilhelms I., zeigt ihren Vater als prügelnden Wüterich, die Mutter Sophie Dorothea als ehrgeizige Intrigantin, entwirft vom ›Lieblingsbruder‹ Friedrich ein ambivalentes Porträt, das seine Verschlagenheit und Machtbesessenheit nicht ausspart. Darüber hinaus lässt die Erzählerin eine Galerie von Herrschaften auftreten, deren körperliche Defizite und charakterlichen Schwächen sie in ihrer unfreiwilligen Komik entlarvt. Kein Wunder, dass preußische Historiker des 19. Jahrhunderts die Einseitigkeit der Memoiren als Ausgeburt enttäuschter Heiratsambitionen denunzierten, ohne sich um das Spezifische der Gattung zu kümmern: dem Leser privilegierte Einblicke aus persönlicher hochadliger Perspektive in die Geheimnisse höfischen Lebens zu gewähren. Mit dieser gründlich überarbeiteten Neuauflage der Memoiren wird erstmals der Kosmos der Markgräfin in seiner ganzen Personenvielfalt möglichst vollständig erschlossen.

Orlando, a novel loosely based on the life of Vita Sackville-West, Virginia Woolf's lover and friend, is one of Woolf's most playful and tantalizing works. This edition provides readers with a fully collated and annotated text. A substantial introduction charts the birth of the novel in the romance between Woolf and Sackville-West, and the role it played in the evolution and eventual fading of that romance. "Le Fribourgeois François Pierre de Reynold (1709-1759) a laissé un document majeur pour l'étude d'un microcosme social sous l'Ancien Régime : quatre cahiers, dans lesquels il consigne l'essentiel de sa correspondance active entre 1732 et 1754. La variété de ces lettres, tant par les sujets qu'elles abordent que par la gamme contrastée de leurs destinataires, propose un témoignage exceptionnel de la vie quotidienne, mais aussi de l'organisation politique, des rapports sociaux et des conditions économiques qui régissent Fribourg au mitan du XVIIIe siècle, avec, en toile de fond, les échos de l'histoire européenne. Rédigées en majorité en français, mais aussi en allemand (64 lettres), avec quelques incursions vers l'italien, voire le latin, ces lettres sont également un reflet précieux des mécanismes subtils associés à une culture bilingue. Elles témoignent de la prééminence du français comme langue de la "bonne société", mais soulignent de plus l'importance de l'allemand, langue officielle du régime patricien. In this book, Muriel Moser investigates the relationship between the emperors Constantine I and his son Constantius II (AD 312-361) and the senators of Constantinople and Rome. She examines and contextualizes the integration of the social elites of Rome and the Eastern provinces into the imperial system and demonstrates their increased importance for the maintenance of imperial rule in response to political fragility and fragmentation. An in-depth analysis of senatorial careers and imperial legislation is combined with a detailed assessment of the political context - shared rule, the suppression of usurpations, Constantius' use of Constantine's memory. Using a wide range of literary, epigraphic, numismatic, and legal sources, some of which are as yet unpublished, this volume produces significant new readings of the history of the senates in Rome and Constantinople, of the construction of imperial rule and of historical change in Late Antiquity.
